Job brief
Legal assistants are responsible for conducting a variety of research, administrative and organizational tasks to support lawyers. Duties can include but are not limited to investigating information for cases as well as researching and reporting on legal subject matters including laws and regulations. Additional responsibilities include a variety of pre-trial, trial, and post-trial activities that include but are not limited to correspondence, materials gathering, and the handling, facilitation, and execution of various legal documents.
Responsibilities
- Examine and collect case facts.
- Carry out research on legal matters, regulations, and laws.
- Coordinate and retain documentation in an appropriate filing system (physical or digital).
- Collect and assemble legal documents, including evidence for attorney appraisal and case preparation.
- Draft or summarize reports to assist attorneys in preparation for trial.
- Write communications and legal texts (various documentation).
- Obtain affidavits and formal statements that can/may be potentially used as evidence in the trial.
- Assist attorneys during trials by managing exhibits, note-taking, or examining court transcripts.
- File exhibits, briefs, appeals, and other legal documentation with the court or opposing counsel.
- Phone witnesses, clients, attorneys, and various vendors to schedule meetings, interviews, and depositions.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required
- Bachelor's degree
- Detail-oriented and task-driven
- Ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks at once
- Strong research and fact-finding skills
- Ability to work autonomously with little supervision
- Understanding of respective legal terminology/legal concepts
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Professional demeanor with discretion regarding sensitive information
- Ability to use Microsoft Office
