Coroner job description

Job brief

We are seeking an experienced and professional Coroner to join our team! The ideal candidate will have a strong background in directing activities relating to deceased patients, such as ordering autopsies, issuing causes of death, and managing a team. The role's key focus is to provide direction for autopsies, physical examinations of deceased patients along with toxicology reports and pathological analysis.

Responsibilities

• Direct and monitor activities within the department, such as ordering autopsies, physical examinations, and toxicology and pathology reports.
• Order inquests to investigate causes of death, whether natural, or to determine in violent or criminal activities played a part in a person’s death.
• Investigate to fix responsibility for accidental deaths.
• Provide testimony in court when required to provide information relating to a deceased person and their cause of death, along with evidence, at a trial for an unexplained, violent or criminal death.
• Manage other team members such as pathologists and provide expert advice, support and training to them.
• Ensure that all records are kept up to date and properly filed.
• Ensure you work in line with patient confidentiality guidelines at all times.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in biology or related scientific field
• Doctorate degree in pathology
• Minimum of 4 years residency/internship training in a medical facility or school relating to pathology
• Minimum of two years of experience working as a coroner or in a similar role
• Strong leadership and delegation skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Trustworthy in character
• Able to provide in-depth and detailed reports and analysis
