Directors of Talent are responsible for sourcing, managing, and keeping the very best talent on the job market. They usually oversee talent acquisition teams. Coming up with initiatives to attract and retain talent is a key part of their role, along with allocation and management of the company's hiring budget.

When interviewing a candidate for a Director of Talent role, you should be looking for someone with an educational background in HR, CIPD certification, or similar and who has demonstrated experience in a similar industry to your company. It is imperative that the director of talent has an in-depth knowledge of the local hiring market and can adapt to ensure the best talent is hired and retained.

Role Specific Questions

  • How has the labor market changed since you first started in the talent acquisition market?
  • Why is it important for companies to complete to hire the best talent?
  • How would you allocate and manage a hiring budget that has been cut by c-level executives?
  • What is turnover, and why is it detrimental to a company's hiring efforts?
  • When the labor market is tight, what can companies do to try and source the best people?
  • If a hiring/talent department had no procedures in place for talent acquisition, how would you resolve that, and what would you do?
  • How does an ATS system help companies to keep recruitment costs down?
  • What are three key methods you have previously applied in acquiring talent
  • How would you present statistical information to a non-HR-based audience?

Behavioral Questions

  • How do you keep up to date with industry trends and initiatives?
  • How do you effectively communicate with executives to ensure hiring/acquisition is on track?
  • Tell me about a project you worked on that was successful. What did you enjoy about it?

Conclusion

Most Directors of Talent will be able to provide comprehensive answers and demonstrate in-depth knowledge of these subject matter questions. Look for answers using the star method and identify where persons are using specific examples from their previous roles/experience to demonstrate their working knowledge.
