Advertising account executives are professionals who manage advertising accounts for marketing and advertising companies and agencies. They usually have a degree in advertising and marketing or a related field and have previous experience in managing high-profile accounts. 

Looking for candidates who have a strong knowledge, presence, and network in the advertising industry will be key, along with ensuring they have strong communication and negotiation skills and a demonstrated knowledge of advertising processes.

Skill-based questions

It is good practice to ask various types of questions, including skill-based, role-specific, behavioral, and situational questions, to identify strong candidates.

  • What is advertising, and why do clients need it?
  • How many advertising accounts have you looked after at one time?
  • What are social media platforms best for advertising and marketing?
  • Have you ever negotiated with a client or brought on a key account?
  • Are KPIs important in advertising and marketing? Why?
  • What main function does advertising play in brand visibility?

Situational & Behavioural questions

  • You are managing an account, and the client does not see the results they hoped for from the campaign. What do you do?
  • You have made suggestions about social media platforms to use for account marketing and advertising but are receiving pushback. How do you explain the benefits and get them on board?
  • You discover another advertising company has stolen some of your agency videos and advertising material. What do you do?
  • You are asked to produce a report on why the accounts you manage have not paid their invoices. How do you compile these reports?
  • Tell me about a time you have encountered an issue in your account management role and how you resolved it.

General Questions

  • What are some things you would like to achieve in your work career within the next five years?
  • What have you done in your career so far to learn and develop yourself professionally?
  • Why did you decide to enter the advertising industry?
  • What are the top three skills you have that you think you can transfer to this role?
  • Why have you applied for this role? How do you think you will benefit from working in the role?
