It is important to communicate with candidates about which stage their application is at. Background checks can sometimes take a while to come back, and some candidates apply for more than one position, so keeping the candidate relationship warm and communicating with them is key.
It’s great to send updates as soon as you get any results. For example, communicating when one part of the background check has been received, but another one is still pending.
It’s great to include any positive updates, along with information regarding their progress:

I hope you are well, and once again thank you for your application for the [Title] position.
I wanted to reach out to let you know that we have received it and it is currently being reviewed by the HR department. We are currently running a financial background/reference check and as soon as it comes back we will update you with the results.
There may be slight delays due to [Reason for the delay, e.g. Holiday, Virus, etc]. In any case, we will keep you informed and we hope it shouldn’t take too long.
