What is a job posting?

A job posting or a job ad is an advertisement targeted towards recruiting talent for an open position in a company. Job postings are produced by the human resources department and include information such as requirements, qualifications, work hours, and compensation of the position. There are two main types of job postings, internal and external job postings.

What to include in a job posting?

A well-written job posting is critical for attracting the most qualified candidates. Job postings should include a clear description of the vacant position as well as the requirements and qualifications. Below, are the key components that should be included in job postings:

  • A brief explanation of the job, the position's expectations, and any other relevant information
  • Information on the company and its culture
  • Years of job experience are required.
  • Requirements for minimum education or specialized education
  • Documents Required
  • Requirements in terms of physical and/or mental health
  • Applicant's preferred way of applying for the job if relevant

Characteristics of an effective job post

The most effective job posting usually include the following:

  • A unique job title
  • Keywords that are relevant to the position
  • Job success criteria that are specific and thorough
  • A straightforward list of requirements and explanation of how they apply to the job at hand.
  • Use a personal and accessible tone that reflects the company’s culture when writing the description.
  • Refer to our guide on how to write an attractive job description for more information.

Job posting channels

Internal channel

Internal job postings are private and only advertised within the company itself. This provides current employees the opportunity to transfer throughout the organization and compete for the job before it is advertised to the general public. These can be shared on your employee portal for example.

External channels

External job postings allow candidates from outside the company to apply to open positions. External job postings can be found on a wide range of platforms such as online job boards, websites, or career pages.

Career page

A key channel for organizations to develop a sustainable Talent Acquisition funnel is career pages. A well-designed career page is a hiring company's most effective tool for building and maintaining its employer brand. No other employment platform has the same amount of information, customizability, or potential for traffic development.

Manatal for example offers a customizable career web pages builder (requires no technical knowledge to use) that lets you list your current job opening, showcase your brand, drive organic web traffic, and provide interested candidates with an unparalleled candidate experience. Within a career page, employers can:

  • Create a career portal that perfectly captures and reflects your employer’s brand and company identity to maximize incoming applications.
  • Customize the application forms on your career page to fit your hiring needs.
  • Candidates applying from your career page are parsed and scored based on professional experience, qualifications, and skills.
  • With our API integration, you can effortlessly link your existing career page and start receiving applications on Manatal.

Job boards

A job board is a website where employers post job openings for job seekers to apply for. Job seekers can utilize job boards to look for fresh job openings in their location, expertise, and industry.

Depending on the job board, posting a job can be done for free, for a fee, or both. Typically, free posting will result in jobs being arranged by the posting date. On the other hand, paid job ads will benefit from increased visibility hence companies should not underestimate the power of paid posting even though the investment is higher.

There are different types of job boards such as general, local, and specialized job boards.

General job boards

If you're looking for individuals from a wide range of demographics, general job boards are the way to go. Glassdoor, Indeed, and Monster, are some of the most well-known general job board sites.

  • Glassdoor: Glassdoor is a job search engine that gathers thousands of job postings from a variety of sources. The emphasis on employee reviews distinguishes Glassdoor from other sites. Before applying for a job, Glassdoor users can read reviews, look up salary amounts, and see company ratings.
  • Indeed: Indeed connects businesses with applicants with a variety of educational backgrounds, ranging from high school diplomas to master's degrees. Indeed attracts more traffic than any other job board. The reason being is that more job seekers are turning to Indeed as a result of the increased number of high-quality positions available.
  • Monster: Monster offers a massive database of available jobs for job seekers. Because Monster is a general job board site, you can post jobs in a range of industries, for a variety of experience levels.

Specialized job boards

There are a number of specialized job boards dedicated to certain employment sectors. Specialized job boards are industry-specific, which means you’ll be able to find relevant applicants with the experience and qualities you need. Here are some examples of specialized job boards.

  • AllRetailJobs: Retailers in every product area can post job openings on this platform. In addition, the portal has a resume database of over 1.5 million retail resumes, with thousands more uploaded every month.
  • abilityJOBS: abilityJOBS is a job board dedicated to people with disabilities.
  • HigherEdJobs: HigherEdJobs connects job seekers and companies in all areas of higher education. Over 60% of the site's users have five or more years of expertise in higher education.
  • eFinancialCareers: eFinancialCareers is a job board that focuses on the banking and finance industry.
  • InsuranceJobs: InsuranceJobs allows organizations to connect with job seekers in the insurance industry. The site features a searchable resume database with over 300,000 insurance sector candidates, as well as the ability for companies to post insurance jobs on the site.

Local job boards

Local job boards allow job seekers to search for open positions in a specific geographic area. This is beneficial for companies for example that have multiple branches in different locations as these job boards will most likely attract individuals from that area, or people that plan to move there.

Social media

  • LinkedIn: For working professionals, LinkedIn is the most popular social media platform. Furthermore, the professional networking platform connects businesses and job seekers, enabling them to share resumes, and advertise open opportunities.
  • Facebook: Facebook is the most popular social media, with around 2.85 billion monthly active members. Employers have been utilizing the free job posting feature on Facebook to advertise jobs and recruit candidates. Employers can also screen candidates base on their Facebook profile and take note if they match the company culture.
  • Instagram: Instagram is another popular social media platform that allows users to post jobs but its potential is often overlooked. Instagram is a good approach to connect with potential candidates on a more personal level. Instagram for business may present a unique side of your brand and differentiate you from other similar companies because it has a more informal attitude than other social media networks, such as LinkedIn.

Conclusion

In conclusion, job postings are used to find talent for a vacant position in an organization. The human resources department is responsible for the job postings and making sure they contain the necessary details of the job such as qualifications, requirements, work hours, and compensation. The two main types of job postings are internal and external job postings. Internal job postings focus on hiring people within the organization while external job postings recruit job seekers outside the organization through multiple platforms such as online job boards, websites, or career pages.
