What Is An Employee Orientation?

A new employee can acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for successful work performance through the process of employee orientation. An explanation of the company's history, culture, and values; an introduction to the management and staff; a breakdown of the employee's work duties and responsibilities; and a review of the company's policies and procedures are often included in the orientation process.

  • Offer the new hire easy-to-access resources like a facility map, a directory of nearby restaurants, a dictionary of company lingo, and an overview of your organization's structure and department. Talk about how the employee's individual responsibilities fit into the overall structure of the business.
  • Make sure the employee is aware of the requirements, and ask them if they have any suggestions on how to make the job-relevant processes more efficient. Give them a simple project or two to get started on the first day, if suitable.
  • Consider assigning a mentor to follow up with the new hire throughout the first several months as part of the training process. As a result, new hires have a built-in friend, know someone to ask questions of, and can receive training and mentoring for their daily work.
